 Owl Radio (Low Vision Resource Center)

A free community service of the Low Vision Resource Center, co-sponsored by Texas Public Radio & San Antonio Express-News. Provides daily radio broadcasts of newspapers, magazines & other information for persons who are unable to read regular print due to a visual, physical or reading impairment. Transmits programming to special radio receivers provided to qualified applicants over subcarriers provided by Texas Public Radio. The signals can be picked up within the greater San Antonio Metropolitan area & adjacent counties & in the Kerrville & Fredericksburg areas of the Hill Country. Staffed primarily by volunteers who read the San Antonio Express-News for three hours daily from studios located in San Antonio. The remainder of programming for the 24 hour service is provided via satellite by nationally-syndicated reading services for the blind. Owl Radio is not funded by a state agency & depends on monetary contributions from individuals, foundations, corporations, special events, government grants & other organizations.

 San Antonio Public Library - Services for the Disabled - Central Library

Provides services for the visually and hearing impaired such as CCTV, a closed circuit television which allows material to be magnified; Kurzweil Reading Machine which reads printed material to the user; a TDD device in the Telephone Reference Department which allows access over the telephone for people who are deaf or hard of hearing; and books by mail for homebound individuals.

Hours: Mon-Thu 9am-9pm, Fri and Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 11am-5pm

Fees: In-library use free; library cards are free to residents of Bexar County; $60/year for non-residents

 TexasTalking Book Program (TBP) (Texas State Library and Archives Commission)

Free library service for Texans unable to read standard print or hold a book and turn its pages due to a qualifying visual, physical or reading disability.

Hours: Mon-Fri 8am-5pm

Target Group: Texas citizens of any age with a visual impairment, blindness, physical disability, or a qualifying reading disability.
