 City of San Antonio (COSA)-Family Assistance Division/Utility Assistance (CPS & SAWS Customers)

City of San Antonio Department of Human Services, Center for Working Families: supportive services, case management and employment referral assistance to families of San Antonio and Bexar County. Family Assistance Center’s main focus is to provide low income families and individuals with the support they need to move toward better jobs and financial self-sufficiency. Through combined federal (Community Services Block Grant), utility (CPS Energy and SAWS), and general fund dollars, the Department of Human Services’ Family Assistance Centers provides help to families in San Antonio and Bexar County that are seeking to meet basic needs, such as utilities and rent, and those aiming for better employment. SERVICES PROVIDED: * Utility Assistance: Project Agua, Plumbers to People, Project REAP, Project WARM (UTILITY ASSISTANCE) * Employment: Job referrals/placement, Job training * Financial Services: Credit report assistance, Open IDA, Assistance to open savings acct. * Other: Volunteer Income Tax assistance (VITA), Rent assistance to families who have received a final eviction notice, Food Stamp Assistance (SNAP) Applicants must meet the priority categories. Funding from: combined federal (Community Services Block Grant), the Annie E. Casey Foundation, utility (CPS Energy and SAWS), and general fund dollars. * Provides referrals to other community services.

The Child Care Services division of the City of San Antonio partners with Alamo Area Development Corporation (AADC) to provide child care, child care subsidies, and provider management services for Bexar County, and 11 surrounding areas including: Atascosa, Bandera, Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Medina, Wilson. May be a wait period. Homeless Child Care Services and Emergency Child Care Services: 210-206-5550. Emergency services are for parents or caregivers at risk of losing permanent housing, are victim of domestic violence, or suddenly become a guardian of a child due to death, abandonment or incarceration of parents. * If you reside in one of the Alamo Region’s eleven rural counties, contact the Alamo Area Development Corporation at 1-800-204-7905. You may also inquire about subsidized childcare at any one of our Workforce Solutions Alamo Career Centers.

The Children’s Shelter offers and coordinates foster and adoptive family services, partnering with couples and individuals who can provide temporary care for children removed from their birth families due to abuse, neglect or abandonment. The Children’s Shelter provides the required training and licensing for prospective foster and adoptive parents and individuals interested in foster care, foster-to-adopt and straight adoption services.
