 Alamo Area Agency on Aging (Rural Counties)

Assists persons 60 years of age and older, especially those who are frail, living alone, low income to get the support they need to live independently in their own homes. Free services funded by the Older Americans Act and TX Dept. of Aging and Disability Services (DADS). ADRC (Alamo Service Connection), provides information, referral and assistance for both seniors and persons with disabilities. Divisions: Benefits Counseling: provides assistance to seniors 60 years of age and older and Medicare beneficiaries of any age concerning their public benefits and entitlements; Care Coordination: assesses the needs of seniors and coordinates local resources to support an individual’s highest level of functioning; Caregiver Support: assesses needs of caregivers and coordinates available support services; maintains Caregiver Resource Centers to provide literature of interest to caregivers, many of which are located in public libraries or senior centers. Nutrition: serves nourishing meals on site and/or delivered to home-bound seniors; Ombudsman: advocates for residents of long-term care facilities. Assists dialysis patients with cost of transportation to dialysis treatments using Alamo Regional Transit.

Direct Client Services - limited assistance with electric and natural gas bills, contingent on the availability of funds. Age 60 or over; Also considers: families with children 5 years of age or younger and households experiencing a high energy burden. Bexar County networks with CPS Energy for payment arrangements, energy conservation, and home energy audits. City of San Antonio Department of Human Services, Center for Working Families: supportive services, case management and employment referral assistance to families of San Antonio and Bexar County. Family Assistance Center’s main focus is to provide low income families and individuals with the support they need to move toward better jobs and financial self-sufficiency. Through combined federal (Community Services Block Grant), utility (CPS Energy and SAWS), and general fund dollars, the Department of Human Services’ Family Assistance Centers provides help to families in San Antonio and Bexar County that are seeking to meet basic needs, such as utilities and rent, and those aiming for better employment.  City Public Service (CPS Energy) Customer Call Center

Provides customer service assistance with account information, billing, deposits, move-ins and move-outs. May also make arrangements for extension on account payment due dates. Can set up a Budget Payment Plan to allow customer to pay the same amount every month for electric bill. CPS averages the customer’s bills over the last year and adds a small percentage to cover environmental factors and changing fuel costs. Any difference between the average and customer’s actual monthly billing is adjusted after being on the Budget Payment Plan for 1 yr. At that time, CPS Energy will settle any debit or credit balance that remains on your plan. Bexar AAA is unable to assist CPS customers with a bill if they are on either the budget payment plan or the installment plan.

 Family Life Center- New Braunfels

Many programs to provide help for families that have had an unforeseen emergency. Other programs offer support that makes families more stable and self-sufficient. 1) Rent assistance, mortgage or utility payments. This is one time help that enables the family to survive a crisis. 2) Clothes Closet for families in the New Braunfels area in need of good used clothing and household goods. SAWS offers the Affordability Discount to its low-income residential customers who meet the income eligibility requirements. The discount will range from $3.63 to $18.00 per month. The amount of discount a customer receives is based upon the household size, household income & type of service provided. The Affordability Discount will be effective from the date of certification for two years. Customers who are certified to receive the discount this year will be required to recertify their income & family size prior to receiving the discount in future years.
