 ALS Association Texas Chapter

EQUIPMENT LOAN BANK: loan durable medical equipment and augmentative communication devices to persons diagnosed with ALS, based upon a recommendation from qualified professionals. Consultation and Referral: available for home visits and phone consultations in order to discuss resources. GENERAL GRANT PROGRAM: Caregivers can utilize our general grant program to pay for respite care. The General Grant program can also be used to cover medical expenses, home modifications, and other ALS-related expenses. TRANSPORTATION ASSISTANCE: Persons diagnosed with ALS can utilize our transportation assistance to cover expenses associated with getting to and from ALS Association Certified Centers and Clinics. COMMUNITY EDUCATION: Offers presentations about ALS and what they can provide for persons with ALS and their families. Manuals and DVD's are available.

Older adults can learn skills that will help them enjoy a more active, independent lifestyle. Classes include: Matter of Balance: Class designed to reduce the fear of falling, stop the fear of falling cycle, and improve activity levels among older adults. Includes 8 classes. Chronic Disease Self Management: Workshop 2 ½ hours, once a week for seven weeks. People with different chronic health problems attend together. Facilitated by 2 trained leaders. Diabetes Self Management: Class meets once a week for 7 weeks, 2 ½ hrs. Focused on people with Type 2 Diabetes. Workshops are facilitated by 2 trained leaders who have diabetes themselves. Subjects covered include: techniques to deal with the symptoms of diabetes; appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength and endurance; healthy eating; appropriate use of medication and more. Arthritis Foundation Exercise: Community-based recreational exercise program developed by the Arthritis Foundation. Trained instructors cover a variety of range-of-motion and endurance-building activities, relaxation techniques, and health education topics. All of the exercises can be modified to meet participant needs. The program’s demonstrated benefits include improved functional ability; decreased depression; increased confidence in one’s ability to exercise. Classes meet 2-3 times per week.

 Cancer Therapy and Research Center

The Cancer Therapy and Research Center, or CTRC, is a part of UT Medicine San Antonio, the clinical practice of the School of Medicine at the UT Health Science Center. Provides radiation, chemotherapy, surgical oncology, clinical trials, mammography, support groups and cancer education. Additional assistance can come from social workers who can help with arranging for home health care, connecting with community services, providing crisis intervention, and offering emotional support and counsel. Dietitian provides nutrition counseling. Also address needs ranging from basic housing and food to programs for stress reduction and exercise for breast cancer patients. The CTRC patients may be eligible for free transportation services to their appointments. The CTRC operates an in-house van shuttle service for ambulatory patients who live within the 1604 Loop

The Caregiver Teleconnection is a free, bilingual, and confidential program that connects caregivers and family members to information and support through the telephone or tele-learning. The Caregiver Teleconnection provides learning sessions on a variety of useful topics, hosted over the phone by professional facilitators and experts. Family caregivers have the opportunity to connect and share with others in their situation during the sessions. Makes learning and support simple: just a phone call away. Call. Learn. Share. If you’ve ever used a telephone, you have all the tools and skills you need to participate in tele-learning, which simply means learning over the phone. Each tele-learning session is intended to empower you to make positive life-changing choices for you and the person for whom you care. The sessions can accommodate a large number of caregivers. Our trained, professional facilitators make sure that each session flows smoothly, and invite participation of the caregivers on the phone. Some of the topics included in the tele-learning sessions are: Caregiving 101, Top 5 Ways to Thrive as a Family Caregiver, The Tell Tale Signs of Caregiver Stress, Living Guilt Free, For Better or For Worse: The Challenges of Being a Spousal Caregiver.
