 BCFS Health and Human Services - Kerrville

Free family Parenting Classes for parents of youth 3-17 years of age. Aims to reduce family conflict and prevent the problems of delinquent behaviors, runaway, truancy and child abuse by helping youths and their families learn to resolve crises and develop coping and parenting skills. Goals: To help families and youth develop coping and parenting skills, To identify youth and family strengths and areas of resiliency, To strengthen and stabilize families by helping them to solve problems together. * Who Is Eligible: Youth ages 0 to 17 and their families, who are experiencing: Family conflict (minor issues to more severe) , Who have run away, Who have been truant, Who have delinquent behavior (non-adjudicated), Who are not currently involved with Child Protective Services.

Provides emergency shelter for runaway, homeless youth ages 5-17. Youth receive basic care, counseling and education while in a safe environment. Average length of stay is 7-30 days.

 Covenant House- Homeless Teenagers - Toll-Free Hotline

Provides shelter and other services to homeless, runaway and throwaway youth. In addition to food, shelter, clothing and immediate crisis care, provides a variety of services including medical care, educational and vocational programs, drug abuse treatment and prevention programs, legal aid services, recreation programs, mother/child programs, transitional living programs, life skills training and street outreach. Covenant House International has facilities in 21 cities throughout the United States, Canada, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua.

 George Gervin Academy- Youth Center

Four major programs: 1) BASIC CENTER: Provides a safe and structured environment for homeless, runaway and/or pregnant youth between the ages of 13 and 17. Provides 24-hour, short-term residential care. The Basic Center Program is licensed by the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services as a Therapeutic Foster Family Home. 2) ACADEMY: charter school, particular focus on recognizing the needs of at-risk youth in resolving critical issues surrounding family relationships, school achievement, social attitude, employment, teen pregnancy, substance abuse, drug trafficking, teen suicide, school/neighborhood and gang violence, self esteem and homelessness. 3) TECHNOLOGY CENTER: accelerated high school with atmosphere conducive to learning for non-traditional students. 4) TRANSITIONAL LIVING: transitional housing (maximum 24 months) for young adults needing help in becoming self sufficient. Community connections, life skills, education, employment, and housing.

 K'STAR- Main Office, Kerrville

Provides counseling, guidance, education and emergency shelter to runaways, abused or at-risk youth and their families. A crisis hotline available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for youth and parents. Counseling for parents to develop their parenting skills, educate and give support. Short term emergency shelter for youth in crisis Youth and Family Services- Is for boys and girls 0 through 17 years old to help reduce and prevent the problems of runaway and truant behavior as well as to reduce the risk of abuse and/or neglect by providing timely and appropriate short-term services to eligible youth and their families. Priority is placed on supporting and strengthening the family unit. Consequently, services provided to the youth and the family while the youth remains in their home is preferred. Short-term emergency shelter is available for youth whose immediate return home is not advisable. Children in Protective Custody- Emergency Shelter is licensed to house twenty children from the ages of birth through 17 years old who have been taken out of their homes by the State of Texas. These children may stay at the shelter anywhere from one to 90 days. They attend Kerrville Independent School District and participate in K’STAR group counseling sessions. Juvenile Probation - K’STAR contracts with the Juvenile Detention Center to shelter youth who are in custody but do not present a threat to the other shelter population. These are the children who need supervision and placing them in the juvenile justice system would jeopardize their safety or create bigger problems for the youth. Other Services- K’STAR is available to Police Departments, County Sheriff Departments and Department of Public Safety to place children for a short period of time at the shelter for their protection and safety when a parent has been incarcerated.
