Informational website, Service and Leadership (Volunteerism, Board Service, Public Service), Engagement (Fiesta Especial), Education (AccessAbility fest), Community Conversations, and more! disABILITYsa.org is a collaborative online tool for sharing information, resources, ideas, and support between people with all types of disabilities; highlighting organizations and businesses that provide these services; and advancing public awareness, respect, and consideration for the success of people with disabilities. Since going live in 2007, disABILITYsa has given over 16,000 unique visitors access to useful information about programs, services, legislation, and “Real People' stories that impact individuals with all types of disabilities in San Antonio and surrounding communities. AccessAbility Fest is a gateway to information, resources, and opportunities for individuals working to overcome barriers caused by physical, cognitive, sensory, and mental health challenges. AccessAbility Fest connects over 4,500 individuals to resources each year and creates opportunities for disability service organizations to collaborate, make referrals and provide more comprehensive services. This program is held in high traffic venues to raise awareness about the value, successes, and potential of people with disabilities among the general public. Fiesta Especial® creates inclusive and educational opportunities for individuals with disabilities to engage fully in the culture, diversity, and celebrations of Fiesta®. Annually, these community-based instruction and training programs serve more than 2,500 children and adults with disabilities as well as 1,500 teachers, direct care staff, family members, and companions who accompany them to appearances and celebration events. The Service and Leadership Program identifies opportunities and provides training for individuals with disabilities who are interested in serving the San Antonio community by engaging in volunteerism, service on nonprofit boards and in public service positions, and participation in strategic conversations about the future of our community. While there are other opportunities for people with disabilities to learn to advocate for themselves, there are few programs that expect, encourage, and empower these citizens to advocate for and serve others. The Disability-Friendly Recognition Initiative recognizes organizations and businesses that have made exemplary efforts to welcome, engage and serve people with disabilities by providing an accessible environment and an inclusive atmosphere. Organizations and businesses that qualify will be able to display a special decal recognizing their effort to go above and beyond to improve the lives of people with disabilities. The Agency Coalition Program will convene businesses, nonprofit organizations, and individuals with disabilities in collaborative conversations to identify gaps in services and barriers to independence. By working together, we can coordinate efforts, prioritize needs, share resources, and maximize outcomes.
