The Aid and Attendance (AandA) increased monthly pension amount may be added to a veteran‘s monthly pension amount if one of the following conditions are met: •You require the aid of another person in order to perform personal functions required in everyday living, such as bathing, feeding, dressing, attending to the wants of nature, adjusting prosthetic devices, or protecting yourself from the hazards of your daily environment •You are bedridden, in that your disability or disabilities requires that you remain in bed apart from any prescribed course of convalescence or treatment •You are a patient in a nursing home due to mental or physical incapacity •Your eyesight is limited to a corrected 5/200 visual acuity or less in both eyes; or concentric contraction of the visual field to 5 degrees or less. How to Apply: You may apply for Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefits by writing to the VA regional office where you filed a claim for pension benefits. If the regional office of jurisdiction is not known, you may file the request with any VA regional office. You should include copies of any evidence, preferably a report from an attending physician validating the need for Aid and Attendance or Housebound type care.

 Department of Veterans Affairs / Low-income homes / ALT Program

The Advanced Living Technology (ALT) Program, coordinated through Social Work Service, is designed to help Veterans who need some structure in their lives, but who have limited income. Veterans live in a furnished apartment setting and pay $525.00 per month for their rent, utilities, and weekly housekeeping and laundry services. The Veterans do not receive supervised care, but case management services are provided by a VA Social Worker.

 Department of Veterans Affairs / National Caregiver Support Line (Veteran Caregiver)

The Caregiver Support Line was created to recognize the significant contributions made by caregivers allowing Veterans to remain at home surrounded by family and friends. Licensed clinical social workers will be available to answer your questions, listen to your concerns and directly link you to the Caregiver Support Coordinator at your local VA Medical Center. Each VA Medical Center has a Caregiver Support Coordinator who can locate assistance tailored to your unique situation. Caregivers are the family members and loved ones who provide care for Veterans who are living with the effects of war, disability, chronic illness, or aging. They deserve VA’s highest level of support. The support line will serve as a primary resource/referral center to assist caregivers, Veterans and others seeking caregiver information to help in the care of our Nation’s Veterans. The National Caregiver Support Line is also available to respond to inquiries about the caregiver benefits associated with Public Law 111-163, Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act of 2010.

 Department of Veterans Affairs / Vet Center (Northeast)

Provides a broad range of counseling, outreach, and referral services to combat Veterans and their families. Vet Centers guide Veterans and their families through many of the major adjustments in lifestyle that often occur after a Veteran returns from combat. Services for a Veteran may include individual and group counseling in areas such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), alcohol and drug assessment, and suicide prevention referrals. All services are free of cost and are strictly confidential.

 Veteran Directed Home and Community Based Services (VD-HCBS)

Program of the VA for self-directed care. Empowers veterans to choose & manage services & supports in their homes as an alternative to living in a long-term care facility. The vet or his/her representative hires, supervises, evaluates & pays the employee to provide specific services & supports that the vet needs to live in own home. (One person may not be both the representative/guardian & the provider.) Can provide home health aide, homemaker, respite, & more. The veteran is assigned to a VA Medical Team, & is then given to a Social Worker Team, who conducts an assessment.

 Veterans Service Office (VSO) / Bexar County

Assists veterans & their survivors to obtain earned benefits from the Dept. of Veterans Affairs. Assists in completing the correct forms/applications & collecting the appropriate documentation to support a claim for federal benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). If VA denies benefits, VSO staff will assist clients compose the necessary statements & forms in filing an appeal.
