The Advanced Living Technology (ALT) Program, coordinated through Social Work Service, is designed to help Veterans who need some structure in their lives, but who have limited income. Veterans live in a furnished apartment setting and pay $525.00 per month for their rent, utilities, and weekly housekeeping and laundry services. The Veterans do not receive supervised care, but case management services are provided by a VA Social Worker.

The VLB Texas State Veterans Homes provide affordable, long-term nursing care for Texas veterans, their spouses and Gold Star parents. Clean, caring and dignified setting appropriate to those men and women who have served our country with honor. Because the VA subsidizes much of a veteran's cost to stay at a VLB Texas State Veterans Home, daily out-of-pocket rates are well below average and include the cost of medications for veterans. Private or semi-private rooms available. Has an Alzheimer's unit to provide highly specialized care.

The Ussery-Roan Texas State Veterans Home in Amarillo opened in 2007 and provides first-class long term care for up to 120 residents, including up to 30 Alzheimers residents in a separate, secured unit. Created and operated exclusively for Texas veterans, their spouses and Gold Star parents, the Amarillo home offers superior care that is Medicare and Medicaid certified. The certified, secured Alzheimers unit provides specialized care in beautiful surroundings. The Alzheimers unit includes cozy visiting areas, a special activity area and a private dining room. A pleasant outdoor, secured courtyard surrounds the Alzheimers unit for the comfort and convenience of the residents. Amarillo was chosen by the VLB as the site for the seventh Texas State Veterans Home in 2003. The home is named after two Panhandle heroes: former VLB member and longtime veterans advocate Mike Ussery and Medal of Honor recipient Marine PFC Charles Howard Roan. Roan died on Pelelieu when he threw himself on a grenade to save his fellow Marines. Ussery was a member of the Veterans Land Board and a longtime veterans advocate instrumental in getting a Veterans Home for Amarillo. He died just before the groundbreaking for the home.
