CHAMPVA is a health care benefits program that provides coverage to the spouse or widow(er) and to dependent children of a qualifying sponsor who: is rated permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected disability, or was rated permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected condition at the time of death, or died of a service-connected disability, or died on active duty, and the dependents are not otherwise eligible for Department of Defense TRICARE benefits. Under CHAMPVA, VA shares the cost of covered health care services and supplies with eligible beneficiaries.

To be eligible for Tricare, one must be registered in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS, )a worldwide, computerized database of uniformed services members (sponsors), their family members, and others who are eligible for military benefits, including TRICARE. •Sponsors are automatically registered in DEERS •Sponsors must register eligible family members .

The Advanced Living Technology (ALT) Program, coordinated through Social Work Service, is designed to help Veterans who need some structure in their lives, but who have limited income. Veterans live in a furnished apartment setting and pay $525.00 per month for their rent, utilities, and weekly housekeeping and laundry services. The Veterans do not receive supervised care, but case management services are provided by a VA Social Worker.

Readjustment counseling is a wide range of psychological social services offered to eligible Veterans and their families in the effort to make a successful transition from military to civilian life. They include Individual and group counseling for Veterans and their families, Family counseling for military related issues, Bereavement counseling for families who experience an active duty death, Military sexual trauma counseling and referral, Outreach and education including PDHRA, community events, etc., Substance abuse assessment and referral, Employment assessment and referral, VBA benefits explanation and referral, Screening and referral for medical issues including TBI, depression, etc.

Family Members of Veterans: Under certain circumstances, family members of Veterans are eligible for health benefits. Some of the programs offered include the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA),(see CHAMPVA separate listing) Spina Bifida (SB), Children of Women Vietnam Veterans (CWVV), Foreign Medical Program (FMP) and Caregiver (see Veteran Caregiver separate listing.) Using these programs may reduce or eliminate your cost for medical supplies, office visits or prescriptions.

The VLB Texas State Veterans Homes provide affordable, long-term nursing care for Texas veterans, their spouses and Gold Star parents. Clean, caring and dignified setting appropriate to those men and women who have served our country with honor. Because the VA subsidizes much of a veteran's cost to stay at a VLB Texas State Veterans Home, daily out-of-pocket rates are well below average and include the cost of medications for veterans. Private or semi-private rooms available. Has an Alzheimer's unit to provide highly specialized care.

Outpatient clinic on northside of city with limited services. Lab, Xray, Pharmacy, General Practicioners. An active ambulatory/primary care program which provides outpatient services to veterans throughout South Texas.

The Warrior Navigation and Assistance Program was created to help guide warriors and their families through the maze of health care systems, connect them with the resources to return them to productive lives, and help them over the hurdles they encounter. If the combat veteran is a member of the Active Duty component, a member of the Guard or a reservist, or is being medically retired, he or she can be assured that there is guidance available.
