 Bexar Area Agency on Aging / Alamo Area Agency on Aging (AACOG / AAA) / Health & Wellness Programs (My Life My Health)

Older adults can learn skills that will help them enjoy a more active, independent lifestyle. Classes include: Matter of Balance: Class designed to reduce the fear of falling, stop the fear of falling cycle, and improve activity levels among older adults. Includes 8 classes. Chronic Disease Self Management: Workshop 2 ½ hours, once a week for seven weeks. People with different chronic health problems attend together. Facilitated by 2 trained leaders. Diabetes Self Management: Class meets once a week for 7 weeks, 2 ½ hrs. Focused on people with Type 2 Diabetes. Workshops are facilitated by 2 trained leaders who have diabetes themselves. Subjects covered include: techniques to deal with the symptoms of diabetes; appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength and endurance; healthy eating; appropriate use of medication and more. Arthritis Foundation Exercise: Community-based recreational exercise program developed by the Arthritis Foundation. Trained instructors cover a variety of range-of-motion and endurance-building activities, relaxation techniques, and health education topics. All of the exercises can be modified to meet participant needs. The program’s demonstrated benefits include improved functional ability; decreased depression; increased confidence in one’s ability to exercise. Classes meet 2-3 times per week.

 San Antonio OASIS (OASIS at Morningside)

OASIS is a non-profit organization offering challenging programs in the arts, humanities, health, technology & volunteer service for people 50 years of age & older. * Handyman Program: minor home repair for cost of supplies only. OASIS volunteers provide the labor. * Also provides physical fitness classes. OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program offers a 12-hour training session for volunteers. Once trained, volunteers meet one-on-one with a child in grades 1, 2 & 3 in 44 Northside I.S.D. and 10 San Antonio I.S.D. elementary schools to read, write and improve communication skills. * OASIS has 4 outreach locations: Copeland Activity Center, Elvira Cisneros Senior Community Center, & Northeast/District 10 Senior Center, & Baptist Health System Healthlink.

 Support and Empowerment for Older Adults with IDD and their Caregivers

This Program aims to educate older adults with IDD and their caregivers in health and wellness. Topics in the program will include, health, finance, spirituality, caregiver care, nutrition and physical fitness in order to strive in becoming a healthier and more efficient self-manager and caregiver. Sessions are 2 to 3 hours for 6 weeks (Series of 6 classes once a week)
